Span's stability a concern in community: ; Ambulances were ordered not to use crossing

HURRICANE - Lucille Bostic doesn't know if the delay contributedto the death of her ailing husband, but she certainly had no ideathat county ambulances had been ordered not to cross the bridge 200to 250 yards from her home just outside Hurricane.

"There's nothing wrong with that bridge," Bostic said Tuesday.

An engineer working for the county planning office disagrees.

"It is a catastrophe waiting to happen," Randy Richardson toldthe Putnam County Commission on Tuesday. The concrete structure overHurricane Creek has no guardrails, no curbing, no lighting, he said.
