Oahu blackout interrupts Obamas' Hawaii vacation

President-elect Barack Obama and his family were among the thousands of tourists whose vacations were interrupted when the Hawaiian island of Oahu lost power during heavy rain and lightning.

Hawaiian Electric Co. sent an emergency power generator to Obama's beach house and set it up for him after power to the entire island was knocked out Friday evening, leaving 800,000 people in the dark, company spokeswoman Jan Loose said. She said Gov. Linda Lingle's office and the Marine Corps also pitched in to "keep his communications going and keep him safe."
