giants 3, d'backs 1

Without Barry Bonds, the San Francisco Giants were fine - for onenight.

Bonds was hospitalized for exhaustion Sunday night, just minutesbefore the Giants played the Arizona Diamondbacks, and spent thenight as a precaution.

The Giants were able to overcome his absence thanks to JasonSchmidt, who pitched into the ninth to lead the NL-West leaders.

Giants trainer Stan Conte said Bonds showed signs of being draineda day after he came out of the game with a racing heart - up to 160beats per minute.

"The best word is exhausted," Conte said. "I thought it best thathe be monitored overnight just to be sure, especially in light ofwhat happened yesterday - even though he was over that."

Bonds homered off Randy Johnson on Saturday in his first game backfollowing the death of his father. After rounding the bases, he hadheart palpitations and trouble breathing.

Benito Santiago and Edgardo Alfonzo hit RBI doubles as the Giantsbeat the Diamondbacks for the 12th time in 15 games. Jeffrey Hammondsstarted in left field and batted cleanup in Bonds' place.
