SA: Youth attack man over mobile phone

ADELAIDE, Dec 3 AAP - Three youths have been arrested after attacking and robbing a
19-year-old man of his mobile phone at Victor Harbor, south of Adelaide, last night.

A police spokeswoman said the attack occurred at Warland Reserve about 1am (CDT).

The man received minor grazing and bruising to his head as a result of assault but
required no medical treatment.

A 16-year-old youth from Morphett Vale has been arrested and charged with assault,
robbery with violence and disorderly behaviour.

Another 16-year-old from Christies Beach and a 15-year-old from Morphett Vale have
been arrested and charged with assault and disorderly behaviour.

The three youths are due to appear in the Christies Beach magistrates court on January 3.

The Australian Federation of Air Pilots says it wants an independent assessment of
the BAE-146's safety.

Executive director TERRY O'CONNELL has told ABC radio that some pilots have been grounded
medically as a result of the fumes.

Mr O'CONNELL says the Senate inquiry has been doing a thorough job of investigating
the problem, and says the grounding of the BAE-146 probably won't be neccessary.

BRISBANE, Feb 4 AAP - The Australian Broadcasting Authority (ABA) will sanction the
Nine Network for breaching licensing conditions by advertising inappropriate programs
during children's viewing times.

The ABA intends to impose an additional condition on the licence of QTQ Brisbane following
its televising of promotions for M-classified programs in G-rated viewing times.

"This is the first time the ABA has notified a licensee of the ABA's intention to make

The owners of the Indian Pacific said its driver followed procedures by stopping at
the red signal and then proceeding with caution.

"It stopped at a red signal ... it then (made) contact with train control and then
moved forward with caution, it moved very slowly," Great Southern Railway chief executive
Stephen Bradford told AAP.

"There had been some other previous red signals and that's how the train had been proceeding
in accordance with train orders."

He said the driver returned a negative test for drugs and alcohol.

The National Rail Authority was this morning analysing the train's data logger, he said.

Drivers of the Indian Pacific are contracted out by the National Rail Corporation.

Mr Bradford said in terms of train operating practice, when drivers approached a red
signal that didn't turn green, they were to call a central control and await instructions.

If there was no response from control, drivers were permitted to proceed with caution.

Mr Bradford said yesterday's driver stopped at the red signal and rolled out slowly,
moving just 50 metres.

CANBERRA, April 15 AAP - A group of Afghans who sought asylum status in New Zealand had
passed through Australia on valid French passports and had not been the subject of a travel
warning, immigration authorities insisted today.

An immigration department spokesman disputed claims that Australian authorities had failed
to heed a tip-off that the the 11 Afghans were trying to make their way to New Zealand.

The Afghans, including three young children, boarded a Qantas flight in Brisbane, arriving
in Wellington on Saturday night without travel documents, seeking asylum.

The New Zealand Customs Service is reported today as saying that the group had tried to
flush passports and other documents down a toilet on the flight from Australia, and on arrival
at Wellington Airport.

They were reportedly well dressed and each adult carried $US250 ($NZ468, $A395) in cash,
and some in New Zealand dollars.

The Australian immigration department spokesman said they were not aware of any tip-off.

"We are talking to the New Zealand authorities about this and trying to get more details,
but it doesn't appear that we had any warning about this particular group," he said.

"There are many warnings current about individuals and groups travelling but at this stage
it does not appear as though we had a warning for these people."

The Afghans had flown into Cairns on Saturday, carrying valid French passports, he said.

"They were cleared through immigration in Cairns and went to Brisbane where they
transferred to a Wellington flight, again using French passports.

"They were making no asylum claims here and did not come to our attention and so no checks
were made."

A Qantas spokeswoman refused to comment on press reports that the airline could face legal
action for flying the group to New Zealand.

"The group of Afghans in question had appropriate documentation when they checked into the
flight for Wellington," she said.

VIC: Cyclist killed in head on with Ferrari sportscar

MELBOURNE, Dec 31 AAP - A cyclist was killed today in a head-on collision with a Ferrari
sportscar at Mt Hotham in Victoria's alpine country, police said.

The collision took place three to four kilometres on the Harrietville side of the summit
about 4.45 pm (AEDT), Acting Sergeant David Gamble said.

The name of the cyclist had not been released.

The driver of the Ferrari was not injured.

The death takes Victoria's holiday road toll to 14, and the year's total deaths to 388
compared to 376 for the same period last year.

FED:Ludwig hails renewed Japan trade talks

CANBERRA, Dec 14 AAP - Agriculture Minister Joe Ludwig has hailed the resumption of
free trade talks with Japan during an address to the parliament in Tokyo.

Senator Ludwig addressed the National Diet of Japan on Tuesday, saying he welcomed
the return to trade talks.

The March tsunami in Japan disrupted trade negotiations between the two countries.

Japan is Australia's largest export market for beef and dairy products, and is also
a key market for Australian wine, he said.

Senator Ludwig is now in Korea for further agricultural trade meetings.
